Catching What Automation Can’t: Manual Testing for Visual Glitches
Automation is great for speed and coverage, but visuals aren’t binary. A page can “work” and still look wrong. - Consistency of brand colors across dark/light modes.
- Status colors (success, warning, error) that stay legible on all surfaces.
Font and layout problems across devices
Typefaces render differently on browsers and platforms. A headline perfect on Chrome can wrap poorly on Safari. Budget Android devices may substitute fonts and shift line heights. Manual checks catch:
- Unexpected wrapping, truncation, or ellipses on narrow screens.
- Baseline drift and odd line-height stacking in mixed languages.
- Icon-font misalignments and FOUT/FOIT flashes during load.
Quick manual checklist (10 minutes)
- Open the screen on one iOS, one Android, and one desktop browser.
- Toggle light/dark mode and a high-contrast theme if available.
- Zoom to 125% and 150%; bump system font size once.
- Paste a long string (e.g., a long name or product title) to test wrapping.
- Hover, focus, and press every interactive element; look for contrast drops.
- Compare A/B variants side by side for spacing, type scale, and CTA weight.
- Record a 15–30s clip of any visual glitch and attach to the bug.
When to prioritize manual passes
- Before launching or ramping an A/B test.
- After typography, color, or spacing refactors.
